Little Red Riding Hood- Review by David Knight
The second GSO Wooly Kinderconcert was given on 19 January,2013. Offered three times in the morning for children five and under, this time the story was “Little Red Riding Hood.” Amy Di Nino narrated beautifully while selections of Prokofiev’s evocative score were skilfully performed by six musicians led by Judith Yan with her “magic wand”. The players – Anne Monkhouse (flute and piccolo), Larry Moser (clarinet), Katrina Liddell (oboe and English horn), Cedric Coleman (bassoon), Tony Snyder (French Horn), and Julie Strom (assorted percussion) – masterfully evoked images of Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma, birds, butterflies, frogs, the Big Bad Wolf, and the hunter. Judith involved the children in a wonderful manner and many spoke with the players afterward, even trying to play some of the instruments. Overall, the thrilled reaction of the children – and their adult escorts – clearly demonstrated the worth of the Kinderconcerts, whose aim it is to “plant the seeds for a lifetime of music appreciation.” Of note, everyone was charmed by six month old Mia Bales who was dressed as Little Red Riding Hood! The third and final program will be “The Three Little Pigs” on 6 April.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears- Review by David Knight
The GSO’s musical telling of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” thrilled youngsters (aged from an 11 day old baby to 5 and perhaps 6 year olds) and their parents at the River Run Centre on Saturday morning, October 3rd, 2012.
The 30 minute musical experience was offered three times that morning. Created by Judith Yan and Lynly Bailie, this first of three RRC’s Kinderconcerts to be offered this season had Judith conducting Papa Bear (Double Bass: Janet Auger), Mama Bear (Cello: Jeremy Cook), Baby Bear (Viola: Catherine Molina), Goldilocks (Violin: Jose Molina), and supporting percussion with distinctive sounds for each character (Julie Strom).
Amy Di Nino, the narrator, told the story while the musicians performed, and she animated the children’s enthusiastic response.Once the story was done, Amy introduced each musician in turn and they briefly showed off their respective instruments. Judith then said a word or two about the conductor before inviting the children to play toy instruments. After some coaching, the kids beat the rhythm while the musicians played, with everyone carefully watching Judith’s “magic wand”. The squeals of delight were fabulous.
