Player Rehearsal Schedule Survey

Dear GSO Musicians,
Thank you for your incredible commitment to the GSO.  Since the inception of the orchestra in 2001, the organization has consistently looked at ways to improve the quality of our performances.
Part of the changes include the all-important rehearsal process, which we feel produced in better performances, resulting in concerts that regularly sell at 90 to 100% capacity!
In February, we presented how we see is the next step in this exciting adventure.  In order to continue to reach our potential, we explored the possibility of a 2 or 3 week rehearsal period. Using our 2016/17 season opening gala as an example:

Option 1
1. Saturday, October 29th Concert – 2 week rehearsal period – 2.5 hour service
Monday, October 17th
Friday, October 21th
Monday, October 24
Wednesday,  October 26
Friday, October 28
Saturday, October 29th dress (3 hour)

Option 2.  Saturday, October 29th Concert – 3 week rehearsal period – 2.5 hour service
(Due to Thanksgiving Monday weekend, the 1st week’s rehearsal would be on the Friday, rather than the expected Monday night)
Friday, October 14th
Monday, October 17th
Monday, October 24
Wednesday,  October 26
Friday, October 28

Saturday, October 29th dress (3 hour)

As mentioned in the February email, there are many benefits to the proposed rehearsals schedule:
  • Higher retention of the details
  • The 4 day break between Monday and Friday, spread out over 3 weeks, is too long.
  • We need just one more rehearsal the week of the concert.
  • Easier commitment for all musicians, as the schedule is not spread out over 4 weeks
  • Possibility to engage brilliant, world-renowned guest conductors
  • A chance to have a few weeks to rest in between concerts, and time to properly prepare for the next
We would like to hear from you what your preference might be.
Here are 3 options:

Option 1. Saturday, October 29th Concert – 2 week rehearsal period – 2.5 hour service
Option 2.  Saturday, October 29th Concert – 3 week rehearsal period – 2.5 hour service
Option 3. I understand the needs and benefits to this changes.  Here would be the difficulties I would personally encounter:
I look forward to your reply!

Player Availability Survey 2016-17

  • Dear Players, In transitioning to a more compressed rehearsal schedule, there were several exceptions to the pattern that had to be made, in order to accommodate holiday Mondays. Our goal remains to have all players at all rehearsals, but we have included an opportunity for you to express challenges that you anticipate encountering. Catherine
